Combs,
Whitis, Lee, and Leake Are Season Finale Winners at Bluegrass Speedway
Bardstown,
KY-September 26, 2009- Bluegrass Speedway presented its 2009 season finale on
Saturday evening and Rick Combs of Bethel, OH became the 13th
different 44 Auto Mart Super Late Model feature winner of the season.
Logan Whitis of Hustonville, KY picked up the win in the $400 to win
special for the WBRT 1320-AM Sportsman division, while Benji Lee of Loretto, KY
scored his second straight Modified feature victory, with Brad Leake of
Bardstown, KY winning his second Street Stock feature of the year.
Rick
Combs and Rob Starkey would bring the 25 lap 44 Auto Mart Super Late Model
feature event to the green flag of chief starter Brian Axsom and Combs would
immediately jump to the race lead, followed by Johnny Wheeler, Jeff Watson,
Starkey, and David Webb. Watson
would take second from Wheeler on lap 2, while Webb rolled past Starkey on the
same circuit. The front five would
remain the same, with Combs setting a blistering pace at the point as he began
lapping back markers on lap 10. Jarryd
Holshouser would make his way into the top five on lap 11, driving by Starkey,
while Combs had a full straightaway lead on Watson as the field received the
halfway signal. Combs would roll
out to a half-track lead by lap 17 as Holshouser had chased down Webb for the
fourth position. Holshouser would
pull past Webb for fourth on lap 20, but it would be all Rick Combs on this
evening as the Bethel, OH native became the 13th different 44 Auto
Mart Super Late Model feature winner of the season at the ½ mile high-banked
clay oval in the Tim Hall owned Taylor Iron and Metal/Graphic Impressions/Austin
Bryant sponsored #11H C.J. Rayburn Race Car, Estes Race Engines powered mount.
Watson would take runner-up honors for the second straight week, with
Wheeler claiming third for the second straight week.
Holshouser and Webb would complete the top five.
Wheeler was the top qualifier in time trials and Combs also won the heat.
The
$400 to win special for the WBRT 1320-AM Sportsman division would see Logan
Whitis take the lead in the early going of the 20 lap event.
Robbie Settles would chase down Whitis in the late stages of the event
and pressure Whitis over the final five laps, but it would be to no avail as
Whitis would hold the charges of Settles over the final five circuits to score
his second career Bluegrass Speedway feature victory.
Whitis would score the win in the Gary Whitis owned Back and Body
Chiropractic/Whited Auto Sales/Seven Oaks Farms/Bennett’s Car Care sponsored
#12w Chevy Monte Carlo. Settles
would have to settle for second, while Pat Hagan, Rob Jones, and Sam Mull
completed the top five. Settles
would win the heat for the division, while Hagan would be the top qualifier.
The
20 lap Modified main event would roll to green after the field had to work the
racetrack back in as rain drops began to fall but would soon quit, with Benji
Lee jumping to the race lead, followed by Josh Lucas, Jason Wheatley, J.T. Ayers,
and Michael England. Dion
Benningfield would draw the only caution of the event on lap 3 after getting
into the wall in turn one. With
action back underway, Lee would pull out to a bit of a lead as Wheatley had made
his way to second by the halfway point. Race
leader Lee would encounter some slower traffic on lap 14 and this would allow
Wheatley to close in a bit on the leader, but Lee would clear traffic and drive
on over the final four laps to score his 32nd career Modified feature
victory at Bluegrass Speedway in his Thompson Heat and Air/Smart Shoppers/St.
Joe Garage/Kirker Automotive Finishes/Springfield Auto and Farm Supply/B&B
Motorsports sponsored #03 Bandit Race Car, Dale Meers Race Engines powered
machine. Wheatley would take
second, with Ayers, Rocky Wilson, and Josh Lucas completing the top five.
The remainder of the top ten would be Brad Schlosser, Adam Cole, David
Bayans, Sam Huffer, and Randall Basham. Heat
wins fell to Lee and Lucas.
The
final feature of the season would be the 12 lap Street Stock main event and
second-generation racer Brad Leake would lead the way in picking up his second
Street Stock feature of the season in his Bardstown Heating and Air/Leake’s
Auto Sales/Walker Transmissions/Fulkerson Race Engines/Bouncin’ Time/The Yard
Sale Store/El Jimador Mexican Restaurant/Tim Hutchins Handy Food Mart/Harrell’s
Pressure Washing/Waddell’s Auto Recycling/Liberty Mutual sponsored #86 Chevy
Caprice. Jason Bartley would claim
second, followed by Timmy Glazer, Shane Lafollette, and Joe Walker.
The remainder of the finishing order would be Scott Thompson, Terry
Bartley, Fred Mercer, and Roy Skaggs.
