“The Scottsburg Express” Nabs NASRA 14th Annual Spring Sizzler at Bluegrass
Speedway
Bardstown, KY-May 28, 2011- Bluegrass Speedway would host the National All Star
Racing Association on Saturday evening for the 14th Annual Spring Sizzler and
Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN would take the $3,000 payday in the event for his
first Spring Sizzler event victory. Other feature event winners would be
Benji Lee of Loretto, KY in Country 100.9 MIKE FM UMP Modifieds, Robbie Settles
of New Hope, KY in Clayton Homes of Stanford UMP Sportsman, and Scott Beeler of
Louisville, KY in UMP Street Stocks.
The 14th Annual Spring Sizzler event would be a caution-plagued event, with the
race slowed by eight caution periods, one of which would turn to a red flag
after the track would be blocked. Dustin Neat would take the initial lead
at the start of the event, with he and Jewell trading slidejobs on lap 5 before
racing side-by-side for the lead on lap 6, with Jewell finally taking the lead
for good on lap 7. Jewell would fend off the late race challenges of Lee
Devasier to take the checkered flag first in his Southern Indiana Rock Drilling/MPC
Motorsports/S and L Electric/Morgan Foods/Scott County Tire/Jewell TV Service
sponsored #9 MasterSbilt Race Car, Cornett Race Engines powered mount.
Devasier would hold off Steve Barnett for second, while 13th starting Joey
Daniel and 11th starting Joe Janowski would complete the top five. The
remainder of the top ten would be Dustin Neat (who pitted with a flat right rear
tire on lap 11 and restarted at the rear of the field), Rohn Moon, 18th starting
David Webb, Tim Rivers, and Chris Streeval. In preliminary action, Jewell
would be the overall top qualifier in group qualifying at 15.240 seconds among
28 entries, while heat race wins would go to Moon, Tim Tungate, Jewell, and
Neat. Jeff Watson would take the B-Main victory, while provisional
starting spots went to Fields and Wesley Brummett (series) and Jarryd Holshouser
(track).
The Country 100.9 MIKE UMP Modified feature event would see Michael England
drive to the early race lead, but Benji Lee would roll up to the runner-up slot
and after a mid-race caution, England and Lee would dance for the race lead,
going side-by-side for the top spot on laps 13 and 14 before Lee would make what
would be the winning pass on lap 15. Lee’s first victory of the season
and 36th of his career at Bluegrass Speedway came aboard his Thompson Heat and
Air/A.L. Ball Moving and Storage/On Time Courier/On Time Construction/St. Joe
Garage/Springfield NAPA/B&B Motorsports sponsored #03 Bandit Race Car, Dale
Meers Race Engines powered entry. England would take second, with J.T.
Ayers scoring third, while Kelly Warren would nip Josh Lucas at the checkered
flag for fourth. Completing the top ten would be Miguel Coffey, Dion
Benningfield, Elliott Despain, Brian Foster, and Billy Meredith. Lee would
also be the top qualifier among 13 entries at 16.494 seconds. England
would win the dash, while Lucas scored the heat victory.
The Clayton Homes of Stanford UMP Sportsman main event would see polesitter
Robbie Settles able to scoot away from the field in the middle stages of the 15
lap feature event and drive away for his first victory of the season in the seat
of the Bobby and Trey Settles owned BDM Collision Center/Bray Auction
Service/Ice Produce/First South Credit/Wooden Duck Entertainment/Hillyard Floor
Care/B&B Motorsports/Dale Meers Race Engines sponsored #58 Chevy Monte Carlo.
Avral Thompson would outdistance Elton Martin for second, while Sam Mull grabbed
fourth, while Danny Blackwell was credited with fifth after being penalized two
positions in the final running order due to passing before the start cone on a
restart. Rounding out the top ten were Tim Cummings, Derek Bottoms, Mike
Opall, Timmy Glazer, and David Murphy. Fourteen entries would see heat
race victories recorded by Thompson and Settles.
Scott Beeler would dominate the 12 lap UMP Street Stock feature event and would
never be challenged throughout driving his Bootleg BBQ/Pro Tint/Amsoil/Mac’s
Race Engines/Terry’s Satellite City/Daryl Hadley Racing sponsored #12.
Finishing behind Beeler at the drop of the checkered flag would be Roy Skaggs,
Cory Cummings, Jeff Branham, and Joey Walker. Mark Filiatreau would win
the heat for the division that saw 8 entries.
