It’s a “Nightmare” in World of Outlaws My Old KY Home Shootout at
Bluegrass Speedway
Bardstown, KY-May 8, 2010- With the newest version of “A Nightmare on Elm
Street” showing at movie theaters nationwide, it was a “Nightmare at
Bluegrass Speedway” on Saturday evening as “The Newport Nightmare” Jimmy
Owens of Newport, TN would prevail in the 8th Annual My Old Kentucky Home
Shootout as the World of Outlaws Late Model Series made its first ever visit to
Bluegrass Speedway. Other feature event winners included Barry Chesser of
Bloomfield, KY in WBRT 1320-AM UMP Sportsman and Shane Lafollette of Hodgenville,
KY in UMP Street Stocks.
The start of the World of Outlaws Late Model A-Main would see Steve Francis jump
to the race lead, with Don O’Neal, Jimmy Owens, Tim McCreadie, and Josh
Richards in pursuit. The first of four cautions waved with one lap scored as
Jordan Bland rolled to a stop at the topside of turn four. The restart would see
Jimmy Owens duck beneath Francis and O’Neal in turn one and take the top spot
off of turn two. The second caution would wave on lap 3 as Brady Smith would
make contact with the wall in turn two and roll to a stop, but would be able to
continue. The restart would see Owens hold the lead, while 11th place starter
Darrell Lanigan would get a good restart and make his way into the top five.
Lanigan would work his way to third by lap 10 and begin to pressure O’Neal for
the runner-up slot, while Francis worked in fourth spot, with McCreadie fifth.
Lap 15 would see O’Neal and Lanigan side by side for second, as race leader
Owens began working traffic, with 13th starting Tim Fuller charging his way into
the top five. O’Neal and Lanigan would trade the second spot and would make it
a three-way battle for the lead with Owens in traffic on lap 22, with Lanigan
now in second. Rick Eckert would draw the next caution on lap 26 when his mount
rolled to a stop in turn four with a flat right rear tire. Back underway, it
would be three-wide for the lead into turn one between Owens, Lanigan, and
O’Neal, with Owens hanging on to the race lead. Lanigan would pressure Owens
off of turn two one trip later, with the pair making contact and Owens
maintaining the lead, but O’Neal would scoot past Lanigan for second. The
final caution of the event waved on lap 34 as Dustin Neat would spin in turn
four and pull pitside. The restart would see Owens maintain the lead, while
Francis would begin to mount a charge as he and Lanigan would now battle for
second, with O’Neal fourth, while 12th starting Shannon Babb had made his way
to fifth. By lap 40, Owens would begin to pull away, while Lanigan and Francis
would battle for second, trading slidejobs on lap 42 and 43, with Francis
winning the battle. However, Owens would go unchallenged the remainder of the
way and put the Mike Reece owned Reece Monument/Gannette Appraisals/VP Racing
Fuel/Ohlins Shocks sponsored #20 Bloomquist Race Cars, Cornett Race Engines
powered mount in victory lane. Francis would claim second, with Lanigan third,
while O’Neal and Babb would complete the top five. The remainder of the top
ten would be Fuller, McCreadie, Shane Clanton, 17th starting Eric Wells, and Dan
Schlieper. In preliminary action, four drivers would break the five year old
track record, with Don O’Neal finally setting the new mark at 14.563 seconds
among 40 entries. Heat race wins fell to O’Neal, Justin Rattliff, Josh
Richards, and Owens. The B-Mains were scored by Eric Wells and Brad Neat. Series
provisionals were Chub Frank and Clint Smith, while track provisionals were
Dustin Neat and Lee Devasier.
The 15 lap WBRT 1320-AM UMP Sportsman feature event would see things come down
to a battle between Barry Chesser and Avral Thompson, with Chesser coming out on
top of the battle in his Buzick Construction/44 Auto Mart/Lewis Auto Salvage
sponsored #75 Buick Regal machine. The remainder of the finishing order would be
Thompson, Wayne Hager, and Tim Cummings, as only four of the seven starters
would finish. Billy Meredith would be the top qualifier and also win the heat.
Shane Lafollette would stave off the challenges of Timmy Glazer to take the win
in the 12 lap UMP Street Stock main event behind the wheel of the David Copley
owned Geneva’s Florist and Gifts/Advance Auto Parts/Larue Insurance/K&K
Flower Shop/Select Designs/Henry Miller-#1 U.K. Fan sponsored #63 machine.
Glazer would take second, with Joe Walker finishing third.
